Kohinoor can't be brought back from Britishers, Centre tells SC

A petition filed in the Supreme Court argued that the Kohinoor belonged to India and that the diamond should be brought back to India.

As part of the PIL filed by All India Human Rights & Social Justice Front seeking directions to the High Commissioner of United Kingdom for return of the diamond besides several other treasures,

the Supreme Court of India asked the Central government to come out with clear stand.

The Centre said to the Apex court, that Kohinoor wasn't stolen by the Britishers but it was gifted to the British .

The Centre said that it was given as gift by the then rulers in India mainly Maharaja Ranjit Singh, who has gifted it .

The Centre clarified that Kohinoor diamond was given as a gift to the British East India Company that paved the way for Britain to rule India.

So it cannot be brought back from the British Crown to India.

It is to be mentioned here that the famed Kohinoor diamond was mined in India many years back millennia ago, , the Central government told the Supreme Court on Monday. The Centre also clarified that the diamond had not been subjected to theft.

Historical facts prove that what was called Kohinoor was actually Samantakamani that cast shadow on Lord Krishna in the Mahabharata times.
