Hefty fine, jail time for celebs for encouraging misleading ads
A Parliamentary Committee, in a bid to tighten consumer protection laws has come out with stringent action against celebs and other prominent persons showing the ads, which are violating rules and claims made in ads are found false .
The committee led by Telugu Desam Party MP JC Divakar Reddy has submitted a report on consumer protection.
In the report, he has recommended that offenders have to pay Rs. 10 lakh as fine or undergo a jail term of two years in case of first offence.
He said that for a second-time offender, a fine of Rs. 50 lakh or a jail term of five years or both are likely.
Endorsers, who are normally celebrities like film stars and cricketers, of various products on television and other media, will have to be jailed and will have to pay hefty fine for taking up misleading advertisements.
The recommendation was made by Parliamentary committee, against misleading advertisements and endorsements.
