Former Indian Army Chief general Krishna Rao passes away
Kotikalapudi Venkata Krishna Rao, better known as Gen. K.V. Krishna Rao, former Chief of Army Staff, passed away in Hyderabad on Saturday.
He was 92.He is survived by his wife K. Radha Rao, son Narayan and daughter, Lalitha.
Born in Vijayawada on July 16, 1923, he worked in the British Army and later the Indian Army.
He was with the Indian Army from 1942 to 1983.
He became the chief of army staff in 1981 but was embroiled in a controversy about his successor in 1998
He was the recipient of the Visist Seva Medal.
After the Army Service, Gen. Krishna Rao was Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Nagaland, Manipur and Agartala.
Belonging to the Gorkha regiment, he struggled to make India invincible in military terms. Although an Andhra, he remained true to the Gorkhali spirit.
Mr Rao served in Burma, North West Frontier and Baluchistan during the second world war.
In 1947-48, he also participated in the first war against Pakistan in Jammu and Kashmir.
He was also a founder instructor at the National Defence Academy in the period from 1949-51
