HC stays order imposing dress code for temple entry
The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court (HC) has passed an interim stay on it's earlier order imposing a dress code for entry in to temples in Tamil Nadu.
The stay was brought in, following an appeal by the State government against the November 2015 single-judge order to implement the dress code, which is represented by it's Advocate General that the dress code cannot be imposed as per the Temples Act.
Earlier, the HC had ordered that devotees and visitors to the temple should be appropriately dressed.
It had ordered wearing of decent clothes at temples.
According to single-judge order of the High Court in November 2015, male devotees are to wear shirts, dhotis or trousers while females are expected to wear sarees and other traditional attire.
In its order ,wearing of 'lungis' (wraparounds), bermudas, jeans and tight leggings has been banned.
