Supreme Court rejects plea seeking enforcement of uniform civil code

Supreme Court (SC) has rejected the petition of a BJP leader and advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay seeking implementation of Uniform Civil Code, to put an end to alleged discrimination faced by Muslim women.

 It is not for the apex court of India to direct the Parliament, the bench headed by Chief Justice of India T.S. Thakur and Justices A.K. Sikri and R. Banumathi said.

'We cannot ask them (parliament) to bring the Uniform Civil Code,' Chief Justice Thakur said.

It also warned that the law will come down heavily if such petitions are filed.
