Narendra Modi gives free medical tests as new year gifts

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given a New Year's gift to the people of the country in the form of free medical tests to patients. The free tests would be available in all government hospitals.  Directives in this regard have already been sent to the Medical and Health Departments of all the States.

According to the directive, tests such as blood, urine, sugar, malaria and dengue should be done for free. Along with these, free X-ray, CT Scan and ultra-sound tests should also be carried out by these hospitals.

The directive has taken into account that some of the States may not be in a position to offer all kinds of free medical and health services. These States should maximise the free services in phases. The aim should be to offer all these services freely in the entire country.

The Narendra Modi government had promised to offer the free medical tests under the National Health Insurance Mission. Fifteen State governments have already started offering the free services to the people. Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan in particular have introduced the free medical test services.

As it happens in various government hospitals, the services are already free. But the equipment does not function properly. There are breakdowns in X-ray equipment and free CT scans may be much desired. At many hospitals, the patients are given prescriptions to get the tests done at a particular private diagnostic agency. The government agencies should take these aspects into serious consideration for offering free medical and health services aimed at a modern welfare state.
