Sachin recollects chilling moments of his life

Former Indian Classic Cricketer Sachin Tendulkar gave an account of chilling moments in his life when he saw death from so near.

He has reminded one incident as a budding cricketer, that had shaken him up for life.

As a  budding cricketer Sachin would go to his friends at Vileparle in South-West Bombay and from there they would go to Shivaji Maidan for cricket practice daily.

One day Sachin and friends decided to go to a film before cricket practice.

They had to cross the railway tracks.

There are four up and down tracks for the movement of slow and fast trains both ways.

They crossed the tracks and were midway, when Sachin and his friends realized that trains were moving on all the four tracks.

There is little gap between two tracks.

If they stand up they might get hit by the moving trains.

So Sachin and friends crouched down holding their cricket kit with their lives.

The trains passed and they were surprised to stay alive.

Bharat Ratna Sachin recalled the chilling moments while opening SAMIP (Safety Alert Messages Exclusive for Passengers) and B-Safe apps introduced by the Railway Police in Mumbai on Wednesday.

Rail commuters in Mumbai suburban section are proverbially on the run so as to catch the trains, go to offices or reach their homes. They still do.

Sachin was 11 years old when he started going for regular cricket practice.

They could have used the overbridge at railway stations to cross the tracks. But boys will be boys. They were in a hurry to go to a film and not miss cricket practice. So they took the shorter route of crossing the tracks and nearly paying with their lives.

Sachin admitted that after the incident, he never tried to cross the railway tracks, but would play safe by using the foot overbridge at railway stations.

Sachin, on the occasion of releasing safety apps for the railways, noted that every year 700 people lost their lives by falling from trains hanging around carriage doors and another 1600 paid with their lives while crossing the tracks.

He said just remember there is your family waiting at home, and use the safety provisions such as foot overbridge. Just give an allowance of a few minutes and you will save your life, instead of taking the hazardous methods. He suggested to the rail commuters to just wait for 5 minutes if the trains are crowded, till the next train arrives perhaps giving you enough space to stand in the carriage.
