Jnanapeeth awardee Mahaswethadevi has been hospitalised due to deteriorating health.
The 90-year-old veteran writer is suffering from chest infection and breathing problems.
West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee visited the ailing writer and spent nearly 20 minutes in the hospital inquiring about her illness.
Mahaswethadevi is a social activist and a recipient of many national awards for her writings on issues of women and backward classes.
