Rajiv Gandhi assassination : No death sentence for convicts, says SC

The Supreme Court on today said that three convicts in the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi assassination case will remain in jail, stating that Tamil Nadu state government making decision to set free the three convicts is against the laws.

The Apex Court said that three judge bench will decide the matter later and made it clear that state do not have power to take decision on sentence.

Further, it said that state government has no unilateral power to decide the remission of convicts of heinous crimes without consultation with the centre in the case, where the matter has been investigated by the central agencies.
